In the Sixties Richard met guitarist, Chris Redwood who lived just across the road from him in Ringwood, Hampshire and in a few months joined Chris’s Band, The Flames, as drummer and vocalist. “I’ll never forget the audition” says Rich’, “I took to the drums straightaway and I sang the R’n’B classic ‘Walkin’ the Dog’ and got the job there and then! Still a teenager Rich’ went on to team up with Mike Williams and the Valiants based in Bournemouth. They toured the UK and played in Hamburg and Gibraltar. In the late sixties, Rich’s close friend and mentor, Tony Arnold, introduced him to the diversity of Country music. Tony had built a recording studio in his garage and many hours were spent creating original music and comedy. It was here that Rich’s lifetime career in radio began. Tony persuaded BBC producer Jeff link to consider him as presenter of a new Country music programme “Deep South” for BBC Radio Solent in Southampton. He got the job. Within two years Rich’ had joined BBC staff as a Station assistant, later becoming a Producer and Presenter of every conceivable type of programme from News and Current Affairs, to Light Entertainment
In 1989 he left the BBC to develop his career as a freelance while still maintaining a close working relationship with Radio Solent. He was able to explore opportunities in Television, National radio and Corporate presentation.
“The BBC has always been so generous to me” says Richard, “They gave me a base, a regular daily programme, and the freedom to spread my wings in other areas of the business. They gave me my career and for that I shall always be grateful”. After more comebacks than Sinatra, Rich’ finally parted company with the BBC by mutual agreement in January 2007. But now he’s back again on Sunday afternoons from 2 ‘til 5 featuring Inspiring guests, unusual places to go, the classic album track, and your chance to play “The Big Deal, a card game and quiz game, with more laughs than a hyenas’ reunion!
