The Beatles - 1967-1970: The Blue Album (better than the earlier, and poppier, singles. Some really great tunes here) I fear I maybe starting an argument, but my interest in the beatles began and ceased with "When I'm 64" at school. Feel free to point out any other tracks that have not been overglorified/overhyped by the media... Gimme the VU or the stones for that era.

What can I say? You either like ‘em or you don’t. Regardless of the hype – as you call it - The Beatles wrote some of the greatest songs of all-time. Listen to ‘Something’, ‘Sgt Pepper’s LHCB’, or ‘Across the Universe’ and try telling me that they’re no good. Lennon was a genius.
The Stones did what they did very well (rock ‘n roll ‘n blues) but they weren’t as varied as The Beatles. The Stones found a winning formula and more-or-less stuck to it, whereas The Beatles weren’t afraid to try new things and it’s clear that they could turn their hands to several different styles. Both were great bands but The Beatles were more innovative song-writers.
But what am I doing trying to convince you? You like The Levellers, for fiddler’s sake. They’re just a poor man’s Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

I didn’t say I didn’t like them. I just said that my interest in them has always completely failed to take off, mainly due to the fact that IMHO they are overplayed/hyped/glorified/pushed down your ears. I could probably sing a large number of Beatles tracks at you at a moment’s notice (but you probably wouldn’t like it). How much muzak is originally a Beatles tune? That’s what I meant by overplayed. I don’t particularly want to listen to them myself and especially not to a badly rendered cover version while standing in an elevator. I quite like(d) Lennon’s solo stuff and you should know my opinion of Sir Paul. But I’m always more moved by White Light White Heat, The Velvet Underground and Nico and The Velvet Underground. Oh and as we’re talking of innovation, I neglected to mention the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is IMHO a far superior collection than SPLHCB, and is after all what the Beatles have always said inspired SPLHCB. And then there’s Sunflower, Surf’s Up, The LA (Light Album) and Little Deuce Coupe. But what am I doing trying to convince you? You like The Levellers, for fiddler’s sake. They’re just a poor man’s Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Dexy’s Midnight Runners? Searching for the young soul rebels may be innovative and certainly caused a stir at the time, but wasn’t known for the vast amount of fiddling in it. Too Rye Aye is a great album but apparently/allegedly Kevin Rowland nicked the sound and personnel from some other band. Don't Stand Me Down wasn’t worth the money. Once a band starts wearing suits it’s always all down hill from there. [and yes, I know there's a picture of the Levellers out there somewhere with them (looking very smart) in their suits, but I couldn't find it, but this in no way proves your point or mine!] So you’re saying that the entire Levellers output is based on Too Rye Aye? Stretching a point slightly I feel.

B-Movie Heros - Just Say Anything The Wildhearts - Best of (£1.99 from selectadisc - can't beat it) White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan The Datsuns - Outta Sight Outta Mind Thomas Tallis - Spem im Allium (Not gennerally a fan of choral music but this is something else)
Just to put my two penneth in on the Beatles thing. Some of its good and some of its bad. As for Hendrix, whilst I agree that the majority of his stuff is pretty good, there are some of the later releases particularly with the Band of Gypsies that leave me a bit cold, but I don't really like criticising other peoples musical taste, unless you like Take That or S-Club 7 then I can be petty scathing

Rod Stewart and The Faces – Changing Faces/Best of (a bit disappointing in places but maybe that’s because I was listening through headphones) Jimi Hendrix – BBC Sessions (worth it just for his version of Killing Floor) Rolling Stones – Singles: London Years (the best years) Adam & The Ants – Kings of the Wild Frontier (the wonder years, some great – less poppy – album tracks) Silverginger 5 – Black Leather Mojo (weekly dose of Ginger, as recommended by the doctor)
I’ve also been listening to the steady thump-thump-thump of people jumping on the cricket bandwagon.
